Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
While the world waits to see if authoritarianism is indeed the wave of the future in Ukraine, we in America get to watch our own efforts to fight same.
I’m speaking of the 1/6 Committee. Which is a speeding bullet these days. One which seems close to hitting its mark.
Dismaying discoveries so far include:
The president and assistant attorney general Jeffrey Clark schemed to involve the Justice Department in a plot to invalidate the election.
An executive order was drafted to allow the federal government to seize voting machines.
Seven states put forth fake slates of electors.
Former president Trump was reportedly in contact with a team led by Rudolph W. Giuliani, John Eastman, Boris Epshteyn and Stephen K. Bannon, who set up a post at the Willard hotel working to delay certification of electoral votes.
Republican members of Congress sent texts to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows concerning the plan to engage the Justice Department or to prevent Congress from counting the electoral votes.
And we continue to see increasing cooperation from Trump administration officials, including former attorney general William P. Barr.
But what do we get from your side of the aisle?
Feeble excuses for nixing a bipartisan commission with the notion that there was nothing more to learn about that day. As Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) put it this past May, “It’s not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress."
Whoops. No worries about a secret plot to overthrow an election I guess.
“I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down, and the wolves are going to find out that they're now sheep. And they're the ones who are, in fact, going to, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kind of laws they're breaking." Newt Gingrich
So in that warped world you go to jail for doing your job under the Constitution, but subverting democracy is just fine.
Wow. Is your head spinning too?
