An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defend Article I: Congress Must Control War Powers

I am writing as a deeply concerned American citizen to demand that Congress immediately oppose and halt any unauthorized military action against Iran and exercise its constitutional duty to restrain executive war powers. Under Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution, the authority to declare war rests solely with Congress. The American people have not been consulted, Congress has not issued a formal declaration of war, and yet our nation appears to be escalating military operations that risk dragging the United States into another devastating and unlawful conflict. Recent reports describing the destruction of a girls’ school in Iran, resulting in the deaths of numerous young students, are profoundly disturbing. The killing of children and civilians in the course of military operations raises grave questions under international humanitarian law. The deliberate or reckless targeting of civilian infrastructure—including schools—violates the core principles of the Geneva Conventions, which require the protection of noncombatants during armed conflict. The deaths of these children must not be dismissed as collateral damage. If verified, the strike on a school full of young girls represents a moral tragedy and may constitute a crime against humanity under international law. Every innocent life lost diminishes the moral standing of the nations involved and deepens cycles of violence that endanger global stability. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to act. I urge you to: 1. Publicly oppose unauthorized military escalation with Iran. 2. Demand a full, transparent investigation into the strike that killed schoolchildren and other civilians. 3. Reassert Congress’s constitutional war powers and require explicit authorization before any further military action. 4. Prioritize diplomacy, de-escalation, and adherence to international humanitarian law. The United States should stand as a defender of human rights and the rule of law—not a participant in actions that risk the lives of children and innocent civilians. History will judge the decisions made in moments like this. I ask you to act with courage and integrity, to uphold the Constitution, and to protect both American service members and innocent lives abroad from the consequences of another unjust war.
