Lest we forget in the morass of American discourse these days, today is 9/11. A day that, like any momentous event, is seared into memories. 9/11 was a true act of terrorism. And perhaps the last time the American people were united as one.
9/11 is what it took to snap us to our senses.
But we’ve gone back to the tried and true stance of ‘hate thy neighbor.’ While we wait for the next horrific episode that might help cross our personal divides.
In the meantime, this divide has been illustrated against by the killing of Charlie Kirk. This is something that should never happen. But has throughout our history, and will continue, regardless of the period of reflection, recollection, condemnation, and speculation that has begun in the public arena.
We’re a country of too many guns and too much hate. That’s the bottom line.
So while political voices line up to use yet another shooting to aim potshots at the other side, we see even more clearly that no matter the tragic event, the opportunistic need to make political hay will never cease.
And that’s the real tragedy. Or it should be.
It’s disgusting.
