Deferring the debt ceiling for a period of months is ridiculous. This intermittent brinksmanship should not be legal, and the its threat to the global financial system is a dangerous game for the entire world.
Outlaw this practice. You have the majority. Outlaw it. Not just because of the dangers involved, but because it is an incomprehensible news story that makes people cynical about Congress and about politics--which are dynamics that help the Republicans. Fact is, both of the current negotiations Congress is engaged in--the debt ceiling, and the infrastructure/Build Back Better dance--are incomprehensible to all but political junkies, because they're both inextricably tied to arcane senate rules that are unknown to almost everyone. People can't even follow these negotiations on the news, get cynical, and turn out.
The Democrats' hope--and by extension, the hope for democracy, and our habitat--lies in making politics functional, and comprehensible. Abolish this debt ceiling crap. Don't make it a news story again, certainly not before the next election.
