The proposal to cut funding for the LGBTQ youth program from the national suicide hotline is extremely concerning. LGBTQ youth face disproportionately high rates of suicide attempts, with many lacking family support and facing harassment. Cutting this vital service that provides culturally competent counselors who understand their specific challenges could have devastating impacts. The program has received over 1.3 million contacts since 2022, with an average of 2,100 contacts per day in February alone. These staggering numbers clearly demonstrate the critical need for this resource among LGBTQ youth in crisis. Discontinuing funding would eliminate a lifeline for this vulnerable population at a time when they are facing increased discrimination and attacks on their rights. We must recognize the importance of offering specialized support tailored to the unique experiences and needs of diverse communities. Ensuring LGBTQ youth have access to compassionate, understanding counselors can make the difference in saving lives. Cutting this program would be an injustice and a step backwards in our efforts to protect and support all young people's mental health and wellbeing. For the sake of LGBTQ youth across the country, it is imperative that funding for this crucial program within the national suicide hotline be maintained and expanded if needed to meet the high demand. These young people deserve access to the care and resources they so desperately need during times of crisis. Protecting this program is an issue of basic human rights and human decency.
