Conversion therapy is a harmful and discredited practice that puts LGBTQIA+ youth at significant risk of depression, low self-esteem, substance abuse, and suicidal behavior. Despite being condemned by major medical and mental health organizations, a shocking new report from the Trevor Project reveals that over 1,300 practitioners across nearly every U.S. state still offer some form of conversion therapy. This unethical practice, rooted in the unscientific notion that one's sexual orientation or gender identity can be changed, causes immense psychological damage. To protect vulnerable LGBTQIA+ youth, we must pursue comprehensive federal legislation banning conversion therapy nationwide. No young person should be subjected to these fraudulent and discriminatory practices that perpetuate stigma and endanger their wellbeing. For the sake of our nation's youth, decisive action to outlaw conversion therapy in all its forms is urgently needed.
