Oppose Trump's Interference with Gordie Howe International Bridge Opening
4 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to demand that you take immediate action to prevent any federal interference with the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. President Trump must keep his hands off this critical infrastructure project. His threat to block it is economically reckless and contradicts years of bipartisan cooperation between Michigan and Canada.
This $5.7 billion bridge, fully financed by Canada, has been under construction since 2018. Michigan lawmakers wisely declined to contribute taxpayer dollars more than a decade ago during Governor Rick Snyder's administration, yet we stand to gain enormous economic benefits. The bridge will become the largest Canadian and U.S. land port along the border, standing 720 feet high and spanning 150 feet above the Detroit River. An estimated 6,000 people will commute daily from Ontario to Detroit, strengthening our regional economy.
The Detroit-Windsor corridor is one of the busiest border crossings for trade in the entire country. Michigan's economy is deeply integrated with Canada, and our automakers have long supported this second bridge to expedite delivery of auto parts and fully assembled vehicles. Blocking this project would mean higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and fewer jobs for our constituents. The existing Detroit-Windsor Tunnel cannot accommodate large commercial trucks, making this new bridge essential for commercial traffic.
The federal government committed years ago to staff the customs plaza on the Michigan side. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed this commitment during her confirmation hearing when pressed by Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin. Millions of federal tax dollars have already been invested in preparing the U.S. plaza in southwest Detroit. The bridge was built with union workers on both sides of the Detroit River and represents exactly the kind of infrastructure investment that creates good-paying jobs.
I urge you to publicly oppose any attempt to prevent this bridge from opening and to ensure the federal government honors its commitment to staff the customs plaza.
