An open letter to the U.S. Supreme Court

Protect Section 1983 from SCOTUS Overreach

2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I urge you to reconsider the proposed "reexamination" of Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act of 1871. This statute serves as a crucial mechanism for enforcing constitutional rights and holding state and local officials accountable for civil rights violations. Limiting the ability of citizens to bring lawsuits under Section 1983 would undermine a vital system of checks and balances, enabling unrestrained infringement of civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. The denial of these fundamental rights threatens the very fabric of our democracy and the principles of equality and justice upon which it was founded. We must safeguard this essential civil rights legislation to protect the hard-won gains of the past and ensure continued progress toward a more just society for all.
