Halt Invasive Surveillance and Protect Civil Liberties

I am writing to express my deep concern over recent developments that threaten the civil liberties and constitutional rights of all Americans. The planned purchase of invasive surveillance tools by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a dangerous overreach that must be stopped immediately.
These tools, including Tangles and WebLoc, would allow ICE to track cell phone locations of hundreds of millions of phones and create profiles based on social media data. This level of surveillance is unprecedented and poses a grave threat to our privacy and freedom of movement. It's not just about immigrants – this affects every person in the United States, citizen or not.
The recent ICE raid on an apartment building in Chicago demonstrates how these powers can be abused. U.S. citizens and children were detained, and witnesses described traumatic tactics used by agents. This is unacceptable in a free society and shows why we must act now to prevent further erosion of our rights.
Furthermore, the declaration of a "noninternational armed conflict" with drug cartels is an alarming expansion of executive power. This vague designation could be used to justify military action against loosely defined "nonstate armed groups," potentially leading to dangerous escalations and violations of international law.
I urge you to take immediate action to:
1. Block ICE's purchase of these surveillance tools through legislation or budget restrictions.
2. Investigate the Chicago raid and hold those responsible accountable.
3. Challenge the "armed conflict" designation and limit the executive branch's ability to unilaterally expand military powers.
4. Strengthen oversight of federal agencies to prevent abuses of power and violations of civil liberties.
The United States must not become a police state. Our values of freedom, privacy, and due process are at stake. As my representative, I implore you to stand up for these fundamental rights and protect all residents of our country from government overreach. The time to act is now, before these dangerous precedents become entrenched and even more difficult to reverse.
