An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Put the people you represent first
31 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
It’s time to put your constituents’ interests ahead of your political party’s goals. We, the people, don’t want an unelected billionaire to be in charge of the government. We don’t approve of Project 2025.
I am looking to you to stand up for Congressional authority. I’m looking to you to say “Let Congress do its job!” I’m looking to you to say “Only Congress can make spending and budget decisions, and only Congress can decide whether USAID gets shut down or folded into the State Department.”
If you are not willing to stand up and assert that only Congress has the constitutional authority to determine how money is spent, then we have no need for representatives who fail to defend their own institution.
Congress is at risk of surrendering its constitutional power. If you and your colleagues do not take a stand now, that power may be lost permanently. The Constitution is clear: the legislative branch controls the purse. If unelected officials or external influences can dictate funding and policy changes without congressional approval, then Congress has failed in its duty.
As you and your colleagues put together your final spending plan, I also urge you to remember the people you serve. We are, for the most part, not billionaires. If you vote yes to a spending bill that cuts programs that many of your constituents use (such as Social Security, Medicaid, Head Start, Special Education funding, Title 1 funding, free and reduced school lunch, the FAA, the CFPB, etc) and use those funds to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, I will not only notice, but I will be sure to spread the word to all of my neighbors so that they know you are responsible.
I urge you to speak out, take action, reaffirm Congress’s rightful authority, and look out for the people you represent. If you refuse to do so, you are complicit in the weakening of our constitutional system.
