Protect Social Security and Medicare from Destabilization Efforts

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing efforts to destabilize Social Security and Medicare, vital programs that millions of Americans depend on. In 2022 alone, Social Security lifted 28.9 million Americans out of poverty, demonstrating its crucial role in our society.
Recent actions by the previous administration and certain members of Congress have put these essential programs at risk. The Trump administration's attempts to undermine the Social Security Administration by sending in officials to eliminate "waste, fraud, and abuse" resulted in staff reductions, office closures, and increased barriers for seniors accessing services. These actions have weakened the system rather than strengthening it.
Furthermore, the tax cuts implemented through the so-called "Beautiful-for-Billionaires" bill have made the financial outlook for Social Security more precarious. Treasury Secretary Bessent even warned that investment accounts created by this law could serve as a "backdoor for privatizing Social Security." Additionally, the bill is expected to trigger sequestration, potentially leading to $536 billion in cuts to Medicare over nine years.
I urge you to support legislation like that introduced by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, which aims to shore up the finances of Social Security and Medicare by requiring wealthy taxpayers to contribute their fair share. It's time to reverse the budget-busting giveaways to billionaire donors and prioritize the financial security of all Americans.
The stability of Social Security and Medicare is not a partisan issue – it's about ensuring dignity and financial security for millions of Americans in their retirement years. I ask that you take immediate action to protect these programs from further destabilization efforts and work towards strengthening them for current and future generations.
