The filibuster as first conceived was about a senator taking the floor to talk as long as they could to try to convince others on the correctness of their position. If they couldn’t, they could at least slow down the process for a while. But they couldn’t stop it altogether. The filibuster today gives the minority a kind of mini veto over the majority. It was great that we could do this because it forced both sides to work together, but that time is past. I wish it wasn’t, but it is past. The New Deal was passed without the current filibuster. The Great Society was passed without the current filibuster. Republicans are not using the filibuster to find some common ground where we can all forward move together. They use it to prevent anything from happening because they know it enrages people to see nothing happening. They think it gives them advantage in elections. They are not using it to make things better. They use it to grind things to a halt. They use it not to benefit the country, but to benefit themselves. It is time for the filibuster to end.
