An open letter to the U.S. Congress

War Powers Are Not 'Meaningless.' Vote on the Iran War Before Escalation.

As your constituent, I demand that Congress fulfill its Article I duty during this lame-duck session and vote to end unauthorized military hostilities against Iran before further executive escalation. This war began on February 28 without congressional authorization. Despite both chambers voting to halt hostilities, the President dismissed those statutory votes as "meaningless." The Executive Branch does not hold unilateral power to wage war or ignore the War Powers Resolution. The administration’s justifications are contradictory. After declaring Iran’s nuclear facilities "obliterated," officials now cite that same threat to justify new strikes. Meanwhile, the human and strategic toll escalates: - Mounting Casualties. Pentagon databases confirm 23 U.S. servicemembers killed and 865 wounded as of late October. Human rights monitors document 3,636 deaths in Iran, including 1,701 civilians and over 240 children. - Post-Midterm Surge. The USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group and 10,000 personnel are deploying for post-election strikes, putting regional stability and energy infrastructure at extreme risk. - Military Leadership Purges. Defense Secretary Hegseth removed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and Joint Staff planner Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia as strike options were drafted—ignoring warnings from Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine regarding full-scale war risks. Congress holds sole constitutional authority over war and defense spending. I urge you to take four immediate legislative actions: 1. Force War Powers Floor Votes: Pass a binding joint resolution under the War Powers Resolution directing the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from unauthorized hostilities. 2. Defund Unapproved Operations: Insert strict funding prohibitions in all lame-duck defense spending bills barring offensive strikes, combat operations, and troop surges without explicit congressional authorization. 3. Convene Oversight Hearings: Subpoena Secretary Hegseth and Gen. Caine to testify on military dismissals, readiness shortfalls, and intelligence assessments. 4. Demand Full Casualty Accounting: Require the Pentagon to deliver an unredacted audit of all combat operations, casualties, and costs. Reclaim your Article I authority. Vote on this war before more lives are lost.
