I am writing to urge you to support and strengthen the United States' relationship with Greenland, a strategically important and historically cooperative partner. Recent discussions about territorial claims and resource extraction have raised concerns about how the U.S. treats Greenland, a nation that has long engaged with us in mutual respect and collaboration.
Greenland plays a critical role in North American security. During the Cold War, the U.S. and Greenland worked closely through Thule Air Base, a key site for early-warning radar systems and missile defense. This cooperation continues today under NORAD, protecting both North America and NATO allies from potential threats.
Beyond military cooperation, Greenland has been a reliable partner in Arctic research, environmental monitoring, and trade. Its vast natural resources and strategic location make it a valuable ally in addressing climate change, maritime security, and sustainable development. Any approach that undermines Greenland’s sovereignty or disregards its people’s interests risks damaging this vital relationship.
Greenlanders have also supported U.S. interests in times of need. During World War II, Greenland worked with the U.S. to prevent Nazi occupation, providing airfields and weather stations crucial for Allied operations. This longstanding partnership reflects not only shared strategic interests but also a deep trust between our nations.
Additionally, many Americans have personal and family ties to Greenland. Thousands of Greenlanders have lived, studied, or worked in the U.S., and many Americans have familial connections in Greenland. This is not just a political relationship—Greenlanders are our friends, and in many cases, our family. Treating Greenland with respect is essential to maintaining the goodwill and cooperation that have defined our partnership for decades.
I urge you to advocate for policies that recognize Greenland’s sovereignty, strengthen our cooperation, and reinforce the mutual respect that has benefited both our nations. A strong and respectful relationship with Greenland is essential for our shared security, economic interests, and the stability of the Arctic region.
