The proposed legislation that authorizes the sale of over 250 million acres of public lands across 11 western states is deeply concerning. Public lands are a precious resource that belong to all Americans, providing vital habitats for wildlife, opportunities for outdoor recreation, and pristine natural areas for future generations to enjoy. Selling off such a vast expanse of these lands would be an irreversible mistake with far-reaching consequences. Public lands play a crucial role in preserving our natural heritage and protecting the environment. They safeguard vital ecosystems, watersheds, and biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. Once sold, these lands may be subject to development, mining, or other activities that could irreparably damage their ecological value. Furthermore, public lands hold immense cultural and historical significance for Indigenous communities, containing sacred sites and traditional homelands. The proposal fails to give these communities a voice or the right of first refusal, which is a grave injustice. I urge you to reconsider this misguided legislation and instead prioritize the protection and preservation of our public lands for the benefit of all Americans, both present and future. These lands are a national treasure that must be safeguarded, not sold off to the highest bidder.
