I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to impeach President Donald Trump. His actions in just the first weeks of his term demonstrate a reckless disregard for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the democratic principles that uphold our nation. If left unchecked, he will continue to dismantle our government, erode public trust, and do irreparable harm to the United States.
Trump has already abused his executive authority to push through sweeping policy changes without congressional approval. His unilateral orders have altered federal hiring practices, withdrawn from international agreements, and attempted to rework immigration laws without legislative oversight. This blatant disregard for the separation of powers undermines the role of Congress and consolidates power in the executive branch in a way that our founders explicitly warned against.
His conduct toward the Justice Department is equally alarming. By interfering with federal investigations and targeting prosecutors involved in cases against him, Trump has compromised the independence of the judiciary. The Justice Department is not a tool for political revenge, yet he has attempted to use it to shield himself from legal consequences and punish those who hold him accountable. This level of corruption poses a direct threat to the integrity of our legal system.
Trump’s willingness to ignore constitutional restraints is evident in his attempt to halt federal spending without congressional approval. This overreach of executive power violates the constitutional principle that Congress, not the president, controls the federal purse. Even conservative legal scholars have rejected his justification for such actions, reinforcing the fact that he operates outside the bounds of lawful governance.
Beyond impeachment, Congress has other constitutional mechanisms to protect our democracy. The 25th Amendment provides a path for removing a president who is unable to discharge the duties of the office. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment prohibits individuals who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding public office. These measures exist for moments like this, when a leader’s actions threaten the stability and security of the nation.
If Trump has been able to cause this much chaos in just two weeks, we must ask ourselves what our country will look like after four years under his leadership. The United States cannot afford to wait for the damage to become irreversible. Congress must act now to uphold the Constitution, protect our democratic institutions, and prevent further harm to the nation.
