I am writing today to implore you to remind President Trump that while everyone wants to lower crime rates, there is *no crime emergency* in American cities today. While nobody would object to lower crime rates, there are many proven approaches to reducing crime that cities can adopt. Most importantly, it is not the role of the federal government in the United States to “solve crime” by deploying troops to cities against the wishes of local and state governments. Rather, it is the role of the federal government to *assist* cities by providing central guidance and support for the efforts championed by local governments. Sending federal troops into cities against their wishes is not the act of a concerned chief executive, but the act of an authoritarian dictator. Please remind President Trump that he is no dictator.
