Trump started the morning on social media saying: “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to [be] doing much business with Ontario any longer.”
On X, the hallelujah chorus of the GOP account also pushed the idea of renaming the lake.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to American leadership under the GOP.
Meanwhile Canada, not ruled by toddlers, is strategically planning reciprocal tariffs to hit some red states the hardest.
Then there’s that other war Trump started…
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s threatens that the US intends to strangle Iran’s economy. And this time he really really means it.
Maybe he should shake that stick at China. China can supply much of what Iran needs. They have, they do, and they will. Trump is doing a fine job of slowly sapping our strength and respect without anyone’s help. All China has to do is sit back and watch.
Indeed, China rejected any call for isolating Iran economically.
“Cooperation between China and Iran has always been conducted within the framework of international law and should not be interfered with or disrupted. China has already stated many times that it firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions.… China will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its own rights and interests.”
They understand how to play the game.
But on our side, the Iran war has forced the US to abandon many of our Middle East bases. One reason why the USS Lincoln couldn’t be resupplied. And there will be little prospect of reclaiming them now that Iran has been emboldened to successfully attack the troops there.
Or in security analyst-speak…”In my judgement, the US Armed Forces have probably permanently lost access to 15 Persian Gulf bases. Iran now poised to control access [to] the Gulf States. US will have to negotiate new access in western Saudi Arabia, Israel, southern Europe.”
We’re watching the Iran war reconfigure the Middle East. Before this war, Iran was on the ropes. The US dominated, alongside regional allies.
Now Iran has withstood six months of attacks from the US and Israel. Its survival has reconfigured the power structure of the region. Iran as emerged the area’s dominant power. And has demonstrated its ability to damage the oil and gas infrastructure of its neighbors.
Iran has control over the Strait of Hormuz. And all the power that entails. What does America have at this point in the game?
Between Pete Hegseth’s disastrous attempts to make our military some kind of brutal, soulless, Christian-crusader, men-only culture club and Donald Trump’s inability to actually figure out any strategy more complicated than insults on Twitter, this is what the US has been brought to.
And the ease with which the party in power allowed it all to happen is the worst kind of betrayal. Betrayal by dereliction. Where all that is required is to just let it all happen.
Easy-peasy. There you have it.
If this is the type of leadership that gets rewarded by allowing them to continue by keeping their jobs come November, then that’s what we deserve as a country.
But we the people are better than that. We still have the power. Let’s use it.
This madness must stop. And we are the ones to do it.
