Condemn the Supreme Court's Destruction of the Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court's 6-3 decision striking down Louisiana's majority-Black 6th Congressional District represents a catastrophic assault on voting rights and democracy itself. I need you to publicly condemn this ruling and commit to restoring the protections that have been systematically dismantled by this corrupt Supreme Court. Justice Alito's opinion guts Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by limiting it only to cases of intentional discrimination, a standard nearly impossible to meet. Election law experts estimate nearly 70 of 435 congressional districts are protected by Section 2. This decision puts all of them at risk and could allow the disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands by eliminating more than a dozen districts by 2028. As political scientist Jonathan Cervas concluded, "The Voting Rights Act as a means to protect minority voters from vote dilution is essentially dead." This Court has shown it cannot be trusted to protect the fundamental rights of citizens. Chief Justice Roberts has spent decades targeting the Voting Rights Act, from his time in Reagan's Justice Department to his 2013 decision gutting preclearance requirements. Representative Cleo Fields is right that this decision makes it far harder for minority communities to challenge maps that dilute their political voice. Congress must act immediately to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act. Will you commit to supporting legislation that protects every American's right to equal representation?
