The raising of the controversial "Appeal to Heaven" flag alongside the American flag at a government agency headquarters is deeply concerning. This flag, which has become associated with Christian nationalist movements and the January 6th rioters who sought to undermine our democratic processes, has no place being displayed at a federal institution. The United States is a secular nation founded on the principles of religious freedom and separation of church and state. Flying this divisive symbol sends the wrong message and emboldens those who wish to erode these core values. As public servants entrusted with supporting all Americans regardless of faith, we must firmly reject any efforts to promote a specific religious ideology through official government channels. Upholding our democratic traditions requires an unwavering commitment to remaining a pluralistic society that respects the diversity of beliefs held by its citizens. For the integrity of our institutions and unity of our nation, this inappropriate display cannot be condoned or repeated.
