The President’s Son Is Profiting Off Our Tax Dollars. Congress Must Act.
5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!
Dear Members of Congress,
Congresswoman Maxine Dexter of Oregon — Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations — recently moved to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. to answer for one of the most brazen conflicts of interest in modern American history. Republicans walked out of the hearing rather than face the question.
Here are the facts they are running from:
Donald Trump Jr. is a partner at 1789 Capital, a venture capital firm where he has said he is “very involved in the strategic decisions regarding where to invest.” Three months after 1789 Capital invested in Vulcan Elements — a rare earth minerals startup with just 30 employees — the Trump administration awarded Vulcan a record-breaking $620 million Department of Defense loan, plus $50 million in CHIPS Act funding. The total government commitment: $670 million of YOUR taxpayer dollars to a company backed by the President’s son.
This is not an isolated case. Since Trump Jr. joined 1789 Capital, at least four of the firm’s portfolio companies have received government contracts from his father’s administration totaling over $735 million. In October, another company where Trump Jr. held a multi-million dollar stake received its largest Pentagon contract ever.
The Campaign Legal Center has stated plainly: this “falls under the cloud of conflicts of interest” and that “presidents are expected to avoid even the appearance that they are using their office to financially benefit themselves or their family.”
And yet Republicans walked out rather than answer Congresswoman Dexter’s questions.
This is happening while 47.9 million Americans are food insecure. While the Treasury has confirmed this country is $41 trillion in the hole. While you are cutting SNAP benefits for hungry children and gutting Social Security for seniors.
The American people are not an investment portfolio for the Trump family. We demand that Congress honor Congresswoman Dexter’s subpoena motion, compel Donald Trump Jr.’s testimony, and launch a full independent investigation into every government contract awarded to companies with financial ties to the Trump family.
Enough of the walkouts. Enough of the cover-ups. Do your jobs.
Respectfully — and with white hot fury,
