CONGRESS MUST STOP ICE AT AIRPORTS
As a constituent, I urge you to take immediate legislative and oversight action to stop the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in civilian airport security roles. This policy represents a dangerous and unprecedented expansion of immigration enforcement into civilian travel infrastructure, threatening civil liberties, aviation safety, and public confidence.
ICE AT AIRPORTS TRIGGERS FEAR AND LEGAL EXPOSURE
Recent reporting indicates that ICE agents are being deployed to assist at airports during the Department of Homeland Security funding disruption, although officials have given conflicting accounts of exactly what roles they will perform. This introduces immigration enforcement into civilian travel environments and creates a chilling effect affecting citizens, lawful residents, and authorized individuals.
If left unaddressed, this policy risks public backlash, litigation, and loss of confidence in airport operations. This issue requires immediate Congressional attention before these practices become normalized.
AIRPORT ENFORCEMENT EXPANSION CREATES CONSTITUTIONAL RISK
Courts have upheld airport screening authority only for aviation safety. Expanding that authority into immigration enforcement raises serious Fourth Amendment concerns and risks judicial challenge.
ICE AND TSA HAVE DIFFERENT MISSIONS - SECURITY SUFFERS
TSA officers are trained in aviation screening. ICE is a law enforcement agency focused on immigration enforcement, not aviation security. Using ICE to fill TSA roles creates a fundamental mission mismatch that weakens both functions and undermines public confidence.
AIRPORT ICE USE HARMS TRAVEL, BUSINESS, AND TOURISM
The perception that airports are sites of immigration enforcement will deter travel, disrupt airline operations, and harm tourism-dependent economies. Airports in our state are critical economic hubs, and these effects directly impact airlines, small businesses, and tourism revenue.
This policy is already drawing growing concern from aviation professionals, legal experts, and civil liberties organizations.
CONGRESS MUST ACT TO PROTECT RIGHTS AND SECURITY
I urge the following actions:
(1) Publicly oppose ICE deployment in airport security roles.
(2) Prohibit use of immigration enforcement personnel in TSA functions.
(3) Restore DHS funding with enforceable guardrails on ICE operations and civil liberties protections.
(4) Hold oversight hearings on legal authority, risks, and civil liberties impacts.
(5) Establish statutory limits to prevent airports from becoming immigration enforcement zones.
(6) Protect Fourth Amendment safeguards by ensuring airport screening is not used for immigration enforcement.
The solution is clear: restore TSA staffing and maintain separation between aviation security and immigration enforcement. Airports must remain centers of commerce, not enforcement zones.
Congress must act now before this becomes permanent.
Thank you.
