Today I take pen in hand to write and urge your strongest support for the Visible Identification Standards for Immigration-Based Law Enforcement (VISIBLE) Act, just recently introduced.
As we have seen, the Trump administration's mass deportation agenda has employed alarming, ‘secret police’ tactics, including plainclothes officers concealing their identities and agency affiliations behind masks and unmarked gear.
It also creates operational risks by enabling impersonators and escalating high-stress situations. We have already seen impersonators and mercenaries and bounty hunters employed in these indiscriminate operations.
Crimes have been committed under these conditions conditions of secret identities, as well as lawless and brutal behavior, and that must stop.
This lack of transparency and identity endangers public safety by sowing widespread fear and confusion, especially in immigrant communities already under heightened scrutiny.
The Visible Identification Standards for Immigration-Based Law Enforcement (VISIBLE) Act would require immigration enforcement officers to display clearly legible identification, including their agency name and badge number or name, visible despite any tactical gear.
Exceptions are made for environmental hazards and covert operations not involving public interactions. This bill strikes a reasonable balance, allowing officers to take safety precautions while upholding the public's right to know that they are interacting with legitimate law enforcement.
Clear identification reduces miscommunication, strengthens officer credibility, and improves public cooperation - all vital for successful law enforcement. As Americans committed to upholding democratic principles, we cannot accept the disturbing scenes of unidentified agents whisking people away in unmarked vehicles.
The VISIBLE Act is a measured step to ensure basic transparency in immigration enforcement and protect the public trust.
I urge you, In the strongest possible terms to lend your strongest support for this legislation to help restore accountability and legitimacy. Thank you.
