An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defend judicial independence from political overreach by executive

The Trump administration's arrest of a Milwaukee judge for allegedly helping a defendant evade immigration authorities is an unprecedented overreach that threatens judicial independence. By criminally prosecuting a judge over a routine courtroom procedure, the administration is sending a chilling message that could intimidate the judiciary and undermine the fair administration of justice. This heavy-handed tactic seems motivated by the administration's hardline immigration stance rather than upholding the rule of law. It sets a dangerous precedent of the executive branch interfering with the judicial branch over disagreements on policy issues. An independent judiciary free from political pressure is a cornerstone of American democracy. I urge you to speak out forcefully against this disturbing escalation. The separation of powers is too vital a principle to be compromised by the administration's aggressive immigration agenda. Judges must be able to carry out their duties without fear of federal prosecution for making lawful decisions based on their judicial discretion and interpretation of the law. Please defend the judiciary's autonomy and constitutional authority from this unwarranted attack.
