I am a fan. I voted for you and I think you have done a wonderful job as President. I know you understand the stakes of the election, and I hope you will not underestimate the impact of the first debate. Voters who are still undecided are worried about your fitness for office, despite all the good you have done and all the bad things we know about your opponent. Undecided voters needed to see a knockout debate performance, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.
Please drop out of the race. It’s heartbreaking and frightening to change the ticket now, but losing in November will be more heartbreaking and frightening for all of us who believe Trump is a danger to democracy. If you drop out and endorse the Vice President, perhaps she would choose Governor Whitmer as her running mate. That choice would lock in Michigan, and with the backlash over the overturning of Roe v. Wade, there’s no better time for a historic all-female ticket.
Symbolically, tomorrow, July 4, is the day to do it. Deciding not to run again would be the most selfless and patriotic decision in our country’s history since George Washington chose not to run for a third term. At that time, he solidified elected democracy over kingship. At this time, especially with the Supreme Court immunity decision, shoring up that foundational principle is more important than ever.
