Corey Ruiz is dead, shot at close range by Madison police in broad daylight at Williamson and Baldwin Streets, witnessed by dozens of bystanders. I want to know what you are doing — concretely — to hold the responsible officer accountable and protect residents from this kind of violence. The footage is damning. Multiple officers wrestled Ruiz to the ground, used a taser, and one officer was filmed stomping him while the first shot was fired. This happened in the same neighborhood where Madison police killed Tony Robinson in 2015. Chief Patterson has no body camera program in place — he's pushing it to the 2027 budget, which means years more of zero accountability for officers on the street today. The DOJ investigation could drag on for months, and charges against officers are described as "exceedingly rare in Wisconsin." That is not justice. That is a system designed to protect itself. I want you to push for immediate preservation and public release of all available footage, support fast-tracking body camera funding rather than waiting until 2027, and use every tool available to ensure the DOJ investigation proceeds without interference. Corey Ruiz deserved to go home that day. His family deserves answers. So do the rest of us who live here and have every reason to fear that this will happen again.
