Oppose Hidden Tax on Rideshare and Delivery Services

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed additional tax on rideshare and delivery services currently under consideration by Illinois lawmakers. This measure is a misguided attempt to address budget shortfalls and unfairly burdens Illinois residents who rely on these essential services.
The proposed tax is fundamentally unfair and lacks transparency. It effectively forces people across Illinois to subsidize Chicago and other public agencies that have failed to make the necessary tough decisions to balance their budgets. This approach is not only disingenuous but also places an undue burden on hardworking Illinois residents who are already struggling with the rising cost of living.
If additional revenue is truly needed, it should be addressed through more transparent means, such as adjustments to the state income tax. Hiding tax increases in services used by many Illinois residents daily is a deceptive practice that erodes trust in our government and unfairly impacts those who may have limited transportation options or rely on delivery services due to various circumstances.
Moreover, this tax could have unintended consequences on the gig economy, potentially reducing job opportunities for those who depend on rideshare and delivery work to make ends meet. It may also disproportionately affect rural and suburban areas where these services are often more crucial due to limited public transportation options.
I urge you to reject this proposed tax and instead focus on more equitable and transparent ways to address budget concerns. Our state government should prioritize fiscal responsibility and make the difficult decisions necessary to balance budgets without resorting to hidden taxes that unfairly burden Illinois residents.
Please stand up for transparency, fairness, and the economic well-being of all Illinois constituents by opposing this misguided tax proposal on rideshare and delivery services.
