OPEN LETTER RE:
FIRE & RETALIATORY EVICTION RISK FOR OPERA HOUSE TENANTS UNION.
While living in unsafe conditions we together as neighbors took on a fight for safe, long-term, affordable homes in May of 2020. We as a 43 member Union risked a great deal in standing up for our rights and community and have since been left hanging by our city.
We repeatedly reached out, however the NYC Department of Buildings, shockingly in 2 years, has not acted to enforce tenant protection laws and NYC’s building and fire safety codes.
We are now facing significant retaliation, from our provenly negligent and notoriously untrustworthy landlord, and Union-wide-eviction without the protection of the NYC Loft Law we are entitled to.
There is no other path & YOUR URGENT HELP IS NEEDED.
Please find below excerpts of a recent report verifying the conditions at the Opera House Lofts from the Special Inspection Unit (SIU) at FDNY.
Please help our building receive Loft Law coverage by contacting the NYC Loft Board in support of the Opera House Tenants Union.
Doing so will help make our homes secure and safe for the approx 100 constituents of yours in community in this building.
The report excepts below details FDNYs findings after inspection of the public areas of the Opera House Lofts at 11-27 Arion Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11206.
🔥
On May 2, 2022 at approximately 1145 hours the Special Inspections Unit arrived at 27 Arion Place.
…We arrived at the premises; gaining access from tenants leaving the second floor. The building is four stories with (66) loft style apartments…
…The building has an interior and exterior staircase, in which several of the interior staircase fire doors were not self-closing. There was an open junction box on the wall of the first floor staircase and several holes in the walls and ceiling throughout the hallways and staircases of the building.
There were multiple areas in the building where there were piles of combustibles (unused artwork, wood slabs, unused decorative items, etc.) being stored. They were stored in eitherstorage rooms, underneath staircases, or hallways.
…the hallway is full of items obstructing the egress path. The door to this hallway also is not self-closing and the fire rating was compromised due to the glass being removed from the door.
Inspectors were unable to gain access into the cellar but will make another attempt in the days following.
Inspectors of the FDNY Special Inspections Unit issued violations and left the premises at 1305 hours.
