Unprecedented Security Breaches
I am writing to express alarm at the deeply troubling revelations involving Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. According to The New York Times (April 20, 2025), Secretary Hegseth disclosed classified information about a U.S. airstrike in Yemen through an unsecured Signal chat group that included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer—none of whom had appropriate security clearance. The use of this informal, unauthorized channel represents a flagrant violation of national security protocols.
A Pattern of Irresponsibility
This follows a prior breach in which Hegseth and others included a journalist in a Signal chat about sensitive military matters. These are not isolated incidents—they are evidence of an alarming pattern of carelessness and personal recklessness by the highest civilian official at the Department of Defense.
Endangering U.S. Personnel and Operations
The unauthorized disclosure of military targeting information compromises operational secrecy, endangers American service members, and weakens alliances with foreign partners. It also erodes the credibility of the Department of Defense at a time when global instability demands responsible, measured leadership.
A Call for Resignation and Congressional Oversight
These actions are disqualifying. I strongly urge you to demand Secretary Hegseth’s resignation and support a full congressional investigation into these breaches. The gravity of the offense requires a clear signal that no official, regardless of rank, is above the law or national duty.
Defend National Security and Institutional Integrity
Congress must reassert its constitutional oversight role. Please take immediate public steps to restore confidence in U.S. defense leadership by ensuring accountability for this gross misconduct.
