Rein in ICE's use of AI License Plate Readers, stop the fascist state

The misuse of automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology by federal agencies like ICE raises grave civil liberties concerns and threatens to further a fascist state. The data analyzed in the Danville, IL Police Department audit shows ICE is tapping into a nationwide network of Al-enabled cameras, circumventing oversight by sourcing this information from local law enforcement agencies. With over 4,000 instances of officers conducting "immigration" or "ICE" related searches in Flock's system, it is clear this technology is being exploited to track and monitor people without due process.   This unchecked access to a massive surveillance dragnet sets a dangerous precedent. ALPR systems were marketed as tools to find missing persons or combat car theft, not as a way for federal agents to secretly track civilians' movements in service of hardline immigration policies. Allowing this mission creep erodes democratic norms and inches us towards a dystopian future where the government can surveil its citizens at will.   Congress must step in to provide strict oversight and regulation around how these technologies can be used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Clear rules prohibiting indiscriminate data sharing and defining permissible uses under the law are essential to safeguarding civil liberties. Unchecked, the nationwide ALPR network could easily become a potent tool of an authoritarian regime to target dissidents and minorities.   The exploitation of this surveillance system exemplifies overreach by immigration authorities and reinforces the need for complete immigration reform. Congress has a moral obligation to rein in these abuses and protect the rights and privacy of all people within our borders. Decisive action is required to course correct before we cross a point of no return.
