What is the point of a balanced budget if the planet continues to literally burn and flood and die around us? This is a cost too high, the loss of life, the tipping point from which we may not return nor recover. Without sizeable, sustained commitment to the planet, effectively immediately, there is no future for spending your outsized retirement funds and those corporate tax breaks. Your grandchildren will starve and die of preventable diseases, climate refugees will add to warring unrest across the globe, and this pandemic will appear as a drop in the bucket for the mass deaths that will follow. We cannot wait on climate action. We cannot wait on budget compromise. Kill the fillabuster and pass sweeping climate legislation. Go big or die with the rest of us, because this current situation is only getting progressively worse. Paint it in terms of insurance policies and bad real estate business if you must, paint it in terms of Mad Max and Lamentations if you must, find a way to present this reality to your colleagues that actually makes sense to them to care. Big game will die off and hunters won't have anything to hunt, big pharma will take the place of family victory gardens, this is an attack on our basic national triad of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Make other nations the model against whom our policies make us a laughingstock. The world doesn't fear us, it feels sorry for us. We are wasting so much potential for greatness by giving this classist squabbling so much power over our actual lives. Do you ever think of what we could accomplish with a green new deal, how much prosperity followed the first New Deal, what Americans could create if we weren't so sick and tired and indebted and addicted to non-renewable fossil fuels?
