The United States is in the midst of an existential crisis as the executive branch moves to consolidate unchecked power, undermining the foundations of our democracy. Congress cannot afford to stand by as an authoritarian takeover unfolds. You must act immediately to reinforce the separation of powers, protect democratic institutions, and safeguard our elections from manipulation.
Rein in Executive Overreach
• Enforce the Impoundment Control Act to prevent the president from illegally withholding or redirecting funds Congress has allocated.
• Strengthen the War Powers Act to stop unauthorized military actions that bypass congressional approval.
• Codify limits on emergency powers so the executive cannot unilaterally assume dictatorial control under the guise of a national crisis.
Defend Democratic Institutions
• Strengthen the Hatch Act to block partisan corruption within government agencies.
• Ensure DOJ independence to prevent the Justice Department from being weaponized against political opponents.
• Protect the civil service by blocking the reimplementation of Schedule F, which would allow a mass purge of nonpartisan government employees.
Secure Elections & the Peaceful Transfer of Power
• Expand the Voting Rights Act to prevent election subversion and ensure every vote counts.
• Reinforce Electoral College procedures to stop rogue officials from overturning legitimate election results.
Hold Authoritarians Accountable
• Enforce the Logan Act to prevent private individuals from conducting unauthorized foreign policy.
• Disqualify insurrectionists from office under the 14th Amendment, Section 3.
• Strengthen congressional subpoena power to ensure no one can defy oversight without consequences.
None of these measures should be controversial. They are the bare minimum to ensure the survival of our democracy. Your failure to act will make you complicit in the destruction of the constitutional order you swore to uphold. Congress must pass legislation implementing these safeguards now—before it’s too late.
