The very idea of pardoning 1500 individuals carte blanche, all of whom were seditionists serving the man who affected the pardon, is an unconscionable act that attacks a functioning democracy. The root of fascist regimes is built upon building paramilitary enforcers who feel they are unaccountable for their actions, and are free to enforce the agenda of their leader against the rule of law. It is time for a new constitutional amendment that defines clemency by a president. It should bar pardons for one’s self, family, advisors, or actions that benefit the president, or shielding a corrupt purpose. The Supreme Court’s recent immunity decision to insulate the President, should be overturned.
