Since 10/7, there has been no holiday I have been able to enjoy as Israel's barbaric genocide continues completely unimpeded. This Independence Day, while many in our country celebrate, Palestinians in Gaza are being deprived of the minimal health care services that were operational. The only main hospital left, the Nasser Hospital, is at imminent risk of shut down due to lack of fuel for the generators. Some departments have already had to cease operations to try and conserve the power for the ICU and NICU wards. Nasser Hospital has been over capacity for months, but with the recent evacuees from the European Hospital who could make it have only added to the straining of resources.
Two days ago Israel demanded over 400 patients receiving care at the European Hospital evacuate due to an imminent invasion and attack. Most of these patients are children who've recently undergone amputations. They cannot walk. Per the NGO Imaan, with medics on the ground, no ambulances were available to assist. Moving critical patients is risky even in the best of circumstances without active warfare, but for many who've been forcibly moved around and around since 10/7, it's been deadly. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said of the fate of those at the European Hospital, “People are left with the impossible choice of having to relocate, some most likely for the second or third time, to areas that have barely any spaces or services, or staying in areas where they know heavy fighting will take place." For those who were able to leave, videos and photos show patients being pushed in their wheeled hospital beds outside down the street because this was their only option.
The fate of those sheltering at the Nasser Hospital hang in the balance. Earlier today a targeted Israeli airstrike leveled a 5-story building near the hospital. Unfortunately, this isn't the only massacre near the hospital today. Israeli forces also bombed a UN school housing displaced people. Videos of the aftermath are chilling. This pattern of attack is more than familiar by now. Days ago over 250,000 people were ordered to evacuate to this area. Then, Israel intensifies its assault on the area people were "evacuated" to.
This 4th of July I cannot celebrate the day of freedom for our country. As Nelson Mandela said, "our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.” Free Palestine.
I demand that you:
– Hold Israel accountable for a permanent, immediate ceasefire, their violations of the Genocide Convention, and gross human rights violations by any means necessary
– Call for the immediate end of Israel’s occupation and apartheid and support Palestinians in their fight for freedom and peace
– Secure the immediate release and safety of all Palestinians who have been abducted and held captive by Israel, including those whose indefinite detention began prior to 10/7
