An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress; State Governors & Legislatures

SOTU Will you commit to the honesty and transparency the American people deserve

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the misleading statements made by you. Let me take one example. During your recent address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Your remarks, delivered with the authority of your office and read from a teleprompter (leaving no room for error), contained numerous inaccuracies and exaggerations that appear designed to mislead the public. To illustrate my concerns, I have compared several of your key claims with verified facts: 1. Trade with the European Union - Claim: “They don’t take our farm products, and they don’t take our cars.” - Fact: In fiscal year 2023, the EU purchased $12.3 billion in U.S. agricultural exports and is the second-largest market for U.S. vehicle exports, importing over 271,000 vehicles. 2. U.S. Trade Deficit with China - Claim: “We’ve been having massive deficits with China… $1.1 trillion deficits.” - Fact: The trade deficit with China was approximately $252 billion in 2023. The $1.1 trillion figure likely represents the overall U.S. trade deficit in goods, not specifically with China. 3. U.S. Trade Deficit with Canada - Claim: The U.S. has a trade deficit with Canada of $200–$250 billion. - Fact: The official trade deficit with Canada was about $40.6 billion in 2023, or roughly $72.3 billion if considering only goods—far less than claimed. Much of this deficit is due to importing inexpensive Canadian crude oil, which benefits U.S. refineries and consumers. 4. Inflation Under the Biden Administration - Claim: “It was the highest inflation, probably, in the history of our country.” - Fact: While year-over-year inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, the all-time record of 23.7% (set in 1920) far exceeds this. 5. Corporate Tax Rate Reduction - Claim: “I got it down to 21% from 40%.” - Fact: The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act reduced the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, not from 40%. These examples, drawn from a single prewritten speech, highlight a persistent pattern of misinformation that undermines public trust and distorts the truth. As we approach tonight’s State of the Union address, I am left wondering: Will we hear more falsehoods, or will you and other leaders commit to the honesty and transparency the American people deserve? I urge you to take a stand against this erosion of truth and prioritize factual integrity in your communications. Restoring trust in our national discourse is essential to safeguarding our democracy and ensuring a well-informed public. The United States has long been a beacon of freedom and democracy, but under your leadership, we risk becoming a global laughingstock. Will you work to restore the balance of government that the American people demand, or will you continue to undermine the principles that make our nation great?
