An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Reverse Robin Hood! Steal from the poor and give to the rich! FIE!

Medicaid is the largest program in the federal government aimed predominantly at alleviating poverty. In 2024 it provided health insurance coverage for over 80 million people each month. It speaks volumes of the values of the Senate that they would even consider prioritizing lower taxes for the richest families while proposing steep cuts to the nation’s poorest families. Especially in light of the fact that billionaires pay on average from 3 to 6% in taxes. This is a paltry sum and yet you are wanting to give them more tax breaks! Kitty and mini billionaires pay no taxes. These cuts will greatly increase hardship and misery for already struggling families. They will reduce opportunities in the future for kids who will grow up less healthy and poor because their families lack access to healthcare. Cutting Medicaid will put enough strain on the nation’s overall economy that they will make a future recession far more likely according to the Economic Policy Institute. Medicaid cuts will substantially reduce income for families in the bottom 40% of the income distribution. Medicaid cuts will lead to worse health and financial outcomes for young adults. The Medicaid expansions led to better health and financial security and notably reduced medical debt. Medicaid cuts will have terrible effect for health systems and health outcomes in rural parts of the United States. Rural hospitals disproportionately rely on payments from Medicaid to remain open. These cuts will lead to closures of rural hospitals. Rural towns and counties rely overwhelmingly on Medicaid to provide health insurance coverage, particularly for children. In some states Medicaid covers over 50% of children in small towns. The cuts will result in worse outcomes for children who grow up less healthy, i.e. lower, educational attainment and lower earnings as adults. In the past medicaid spending didn’t just provide benefits to the recipients, but also proved to be an extremely good investment, leading to a future workforce that was healthier thus providing a stronger labor workforce. Medicaid cuts that deprive children of access to health coverage could actually cost the federal budget money on net in the long-term, as these children would grow up to earn less wages, pay less taxes and be more likely to receive/need other public benefits.
