Halt the ICE raids in Puerto Rico immediately. Tom Homan's visit this week and the subsequent operation in the San Juan metropolitan area mark a sharp break from how federal immigration enforcement has historically operated on the island. Jose Rodriguez of the Dominican Human Rights Committee called it "very unusual for Puerto Rico," and he's right.
What's happening on the ground is alarming. Masked, armed agents in SUVs set up roadblocks in Santurce, a neighborhood with a large Dominican community, stopping drivers and passengers without warning. At least 15 people were arrested, including a man who was carpooling to work and stopped at a gas station. He has lived in Puerto Rico for a decade, has two U.S. citizen daughters, has an approved residency petition, and has no criminal record. He is now detained, his family left behind, his case unresolved.
The ACLU of Puerto Rico has called these actions a pattern of systematic harassment against immigrant communities, and I agree. The island's transportation agency already handed over confidential data on 6,321 licensed immigrants to ICE. This is not enforcement. It is a campaign of fear against people with deep roots in our communities. Stop it.
