As your constituent and someone who cares deeply about transgender people in my life, I am writing to express my serious concern about the “BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL” and its dangerous attempt to restrict access to essential, life-saving healthcare.
This week, the House narrowly passed the so-called “BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL,” a budget proposal that, if enacted, would inflict serious harm on transgender Americans. I urge you in the strongest possible terms to oppose this bill as it moves to the Senate.
Among its deeply concerning provisions, the bill bans gender-affirming care for people of all ages under Medicaid and redefines “essential healthcare” to explicitly exclude gender-affirming care under ACA marketplace plans. This is not just a budget issue, it is a direct assault on medically necessary, life-saving healthcare and violates human rights.
If passed, this bill would:
• Strip critical care from transgender youth and adults who rely on Medicaid for their health coverage;
• Set a dangerous precedent for future rollbacks of LGBTQ+ healthcare protections;
• Politicize healthcare decisions that should be made between patients, families, and their doctors - not by lawmakers with ideological agendas.
As someone who knows transgender people personally, I can tell you that gender-affirming care saves lives. Leading medical associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recognize this care as best practice.
Please reject this cruel and discriminatory legislation. Transgender people deserve healthcare, dignity, and the freedom to live safely and authentically just like everyone else.
