Support for H.R. 6977 – Better Care for PFAS Patients Act of 2026
I am a voting constituent writing to urge your full support for H.R. 6977, the Better Care for PFAS Patients Act of 2026, recently introduced by Representative Maxine Dexter. This legislation addresses a significant gap in our public health infrastructure: the lack of standardized, science-based clinical guidance for individuals exposed to forever chemicals or PFAS.
As you may know, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to a range of serious health issues, including metabolic disorders, decreased fertility, and increased risk of certain cancers. Despite these known risks, many patients and healthcare providers remain in the dark regarding the best methods for monitoring and managing long-term health outcomes following exposure.
H.R. 6977 takes a vital step forward by:
Mandating Scientific Assessments: Requiring the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to partner with prestigious scientific bodies, such as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, to assess the health effects of PFAS in human tissues.
Creating Clinical Recommendations: Establishing clear, actionable clinical guidelines for healthcare providers to treat and monitor patients with known PFAS exposure.
Ensuring Community Voice: Requiring the inclusion of input from affected communities to ensure that those living with the consequences of contamination are heard during the recommendation process.
Public Accountability: Ensuring that these findings are updated every five years and disseminated widely to state and local health authorities.
For too long, communities across the country have borne the burden of PFAS contamination without a clear roadmap for medical care. By supporting H.R. 6977, you are choosing to prioritize the health and safety of your constituents and ensuring that our medical professionals have the tools they need to provide the best possible care for those impacted by these hazardous substances.
I strongly encourage you to cosponsor H.R. 6977 and work toward its swift passage.
