An open letter to the U.S. Congress

A President Cracking Under Pressure Cannot Lead

I am writing to demand that you publicly condemn Donald Trump’s disgraceful statement celebrating the death of Robert Mueller. Robert Mueller was a decorated Marine who served in combat in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He went on to a lifetime of public service as a federal prosecutor, Director of the FBI in the aftermath of 9/11, and Special Counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. His investigation resulted in dozens of indictments, multiple convictions, and detailed findings that a foreign adversary carried out “multiple, systematic efforts” to influence an American election. Mueller represented a model of steady, disciplined service to the rule of law. Upon his death, the President of the United States responded by saying he was “glad” Mueller was dead. This is not politics. It is a profound moral failure. Even by today’s degraded standards, this behavior has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Members of Congress, former Republican officials, military veterans, and public servants have all recognized what should be obvious: celebrating the death of a fellow American—especially one who served his country with distinction—is beneath the dignity of the presidency. This moment does not stand alone. In the same span of days, the President has issued reckless threats to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants—civilian infrastructure that millions depend on—raising alarm about potential war crimes and catastrophic humanitarian consequences. Threatening to target civilian infrastructure is not strength. It is dangerous, unlawful brinkmanship that puts lives at risk and undermines America’s standing in the world. Taken together, these actions reveal something more troubling than poor judgment. They reflect a pattern of instability, cruelty, and impulsiveness in a commander-in-chief entrusted with immense power. This is what it looks like when a president begins to crack under pressure from a crisis of his own making. Robert Mueller once explained his life of service simply: he felt a responsibility to “pay it back.” That quiet sense of duty—showing up, doing the work, and upholding the law—stands in stark contrast to the cruelty and recklessness now coming from the highest office in our government. Congress has a responsibility not only to legislate, but to defend the basic standards that sustain our democracy. Those standards include respect for public service, adherence to the rule of law, and the expectation that a president will act with restraint, dignity, and humanity. Your silence in this moment would not be neutrality—it would be complicity. I urge you to: • Publicly condemn the President’s statement • Reaffirm respect for military service, public service, and the rule of law • Make clear that celebrating death and threatening civilian populations have no place in American leadership This is a test of whether Congress will defend basic standards of decency—or allow them to disappear entirely.
