Defend the First Amendment — Protect a Free and Independent Press

I am writing to demand that you honor your oath to the Constitution and take immediate, visible action to defend the First Amendment—specifically, the freedom of the press. A free press is not optional in a democracy. It is foundational. It is how the public learns the truth, holds power accountable, and makes informed decisions. When the press is weakened, intimidated, discredited, or manipulated, the American people are left in the dark—and democracy itself is put at risk. Right now, many Americans are watching with alarm as this administration engages in behavior that undermines that freedom. We are seeing repeated attacks on journalists as “enemies,” efforts to discredit credible reporting, preferential access granted to partisan outlets, and an environment where facts are increasingly drowned out by propaganda and loyalty-driven messaging. These are not abstract concerns—they are warning signs. When government officials: Attempt to control narratives rather than answer questions Undermine trust in legitimate journalism without evidence Reward media that echoes party talking points while sidelining independent voices Blur the line between public communication and political propaganda —they erode the very freedoms they swore to protect. The First Amendment does not exist to protect comfortable speech or friendly coverage. It exists to protect scrutiny, dissent, and truth—especially when those in power would prefer otherwise. The American people do not want curated propaganda. We do not want filtered narratives designed to protect politicians. We want truth. We want accountability. We want a press that is free to investigate, question, and report without fear of retaliation or manipulation. Congress is not a bystander in this. You are a co-equal branch of government with both the authority and the responsibility to act. That means: Publicly and unequivocally defending the role of a free press Conducting oversight into any actions that threaten journalistic independence Ensuring transparency in government communications Rejecting efforts—by any administration—to weaponize media access or suppress critical reporting This is not about party. This is about principle. The Constitution does not belong to one administration or one ideology—it belongs to the American people. If you fail to defend the First Amendment when it is under pressure, you are not upholding your oath—you are abandoning it. Fight for Americans. Fight for truth.
