American taxpayers are handing roughly $2 billion a year in Medicaid benefits to workers at Amazon and Walmart — two companies that together cleared $100 billion in profits in 2025. That's not a safety net. That's a corporate subsidy, and I want you to act to end it. A GAO report and analysis by Popular Information put hard numbers on this. An estimated 156,000 Walmart workers are on Medicaid at a cost of $1.04 billion annually — and that excludes dependents, so the real figure is likely double. Another 123,000 Amazon workers account for roughly $927 million more. Walmart's median worker earned $30,520 last year, well below the Medicaid eligibility cutoff for a family of three, while former CEO Doug McMillon took home $29.2 million — a 958-to-1 pay ratio. The Walton family's wealth has grown from $238 billion to $513 billion since 2021. Jeff Bezos went from $187 billion to $255 billion. These companies can afford to pay workers enough to live on. The GAO also found that 66% of employed Medicaid recipients work full-time. This isn't about part-time choices — it's about wages set low enough that taxpayers make up the difference. Introduce or co-sponsor legislation that requires large, profitable employers to reimburse Medicaid costs for their workers. The public should not be subsidizing the wealth of America's richest families.
