An open letter to the U.S. Senate (Maine only)

Oppose Confirmation of Russell Vought to Head OMB

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to urge you to oppose the confirmation of Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). His record demonstrates a troubling disregard for democratic principles, fiscal responsibility, and inclusivity, raising serious concerns about his suitability for this critical role. 1. Disregard for Democratic Oversight: In 2019, Mr. Vought defied a congressional subpoena by refusing to testify during the impeachment inquiry into the Trump administration’s decision to freeze military aid to Ukraine. This refusal to cooperate with legislative oversight undermines the checks and balances essential to our democracy. 2. Threats to Democratic Institutions: As an architect of Project 2025, Mr. Vought advocates for concentrating executive power, undermining the checks and balances vital to our democracy. His support for policies like ‘Schedule F’ threatens the nonpartisan nature of the federal workforce by stripping civil servants of protections. 3. Fiscal Policies that Harm Americans: Mr. Vought’s proposals to privatize Medicare and raise the Social Security retirement age put the financial security of millions at risk. Additionally, his advocacy for executive overrides of congressional spending decisions challenges constitutional principles and risks fiscal instability. 4. Track Record of Legal and Ethical Violations: During his previous tenure as OMB Director, he was accused of violating the Impoundment Control Act by withholding congressionally approved funds for Ukraine. He also obstructed the 2020 presidential transition, jeopardizing government continuity. 5. Divisive and Discriminatory Policies: Mr. Vought’s actions, including halting federal diversity and inclusion training, undermine efforts to create equitable workplaces. His writings promoting Christian nationalist principles and his negative remarks about certain religious groups further raise concerns about his ability to fairly represent a diverse nation. The OMB requires a leader committed to transparency, inclusivity, and respect for the constitutional balance of powers. Mr. Vought’s record suggests he does not meet these standards. I respectfully urge you to vote against his confirmation to ensure that this critical office is led by someone who prioritizes the interests and well-being of all Americans.
