An open letter to State Governors

DOJ must remain independent

30 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

The Department of Justice must safeguard its independence and maintain a strict separation from the White House and partisan political interests. The DOJ's role is to uphold the rule of law and pursue justice impartially, not act as an enforcement arm for the president's agenda. Using the vast powers of federal law enforcement to target the president's critics and opponents is a dangerous abuse of power that undermines democracy and the constitutional system of checks and balances. Directing prosecutors to seek particular punishments like the death penalty based on the president's preferences, rather than on the merits of each case, violates due process and equal protection under the law. The DOJ must remain non-partisan and free from political interference to preserve the integrity of the justice system and protect the civil rights and liberties of all Americans.
