As a Wisconsinite with over 20 years of experience working across Africa, I’ve seen firsthand how USAID programs save lives, build stability, and reflect the best of American values. I’m writing out of deep concern about proposed cuts to USAID’s budget that would seriously undermine our nation’s global leadership and humanitarian impact.
USAID is not charity—it’s strategic. Its investments in global health, food security, and crisis response help prevent conflict, reduce forced migration, and protect U.S. national security. Gutting this funding now would be both short-sighted and dangerous.
Here in Wisconsin, we stand to lose over $19 million in active USAID contracts and assistance if these cuts go through. That’s funding tied to universities, nonprofits, and local jobs. This isn’t just about helping others—it’s about protecting American interests and livelihoods at home.
I urge you to:
• Protect USAID’s full budget in FY25.
• Maintain strong congressional earmarks for global health, food security, and humanitarian aid.
Thank you for your long-standing commitment to public health and international cooperation. I hope you’ll continue standing up for USAID’s vital work in the world and in Wisconsin.
