PROTECT OUR PUBLIC LANDS & OUR FUTURE
Our national parks and other public lands are facing an imminent threat. There are proposals that aim to sell these protected areas for industrial scale logging, oil drilling, mining, or other potentially detrimental business ventures. Reports, such as those from American Progress, highlight specific plans to sell off public lands to fund federal programs. This isn't hypothetical—it's a genuine threat to both our environment and local economies.
To counteract this, we propose the American Conservation, Opportunity, and Recreation Network Act (ACORN). The ACORN Act encourages states to proactively safeguard these lands through these strategies:
Automatic Conservation Zoning: Any federal land transferred to states or private interests, previously designated as national parks, forests, monuments, or wildlife refuges, would automatically become protected conservation areas. This ensures lasting protection.
Rigorous Environmental Oversight: Before any extraction like logging, drilling, or mining can occur, thorough environmental reviews, public hearings, and local community approval would be mandatory. This careful oversight helps prevent rushed decisions and irreversible damage.
Strict Permit and Infrastructure Controls: States will have authority to enforce stringent land-use regulations and protect water resources. Permits would be denied for projects posing significant environmental risks, safeguarding ecosystems, wildlife, air quality, water, and other resources.
Nationwide Network for Public Lands: The ACORN Act promotes cooperation among states, including initiatives like:
• A Unified Park Pass to enhance access to multiple state and national parks, boosting tourism and local businesses.
• Shared conservation strategies for wildlife protection, trail management, and disaster preparedness.
• Cross-state tourism partnerships to strengthen local economies while maintaining strong environmental protections.
Why This Matters:
Protecting the Environment: Public lands are crucial for biodiversity, ecosystems, and recreation. Their protection benefits current and future generations.
Economic Stability: Public lands significantly support local economies through tourism, job creation, and stable community revenues. Selling these lands for short-term gains threatens community stability.
Long-Term Gains vs. Short-Term Profits: While selling public lands may provide immediate funds, it compromises long-term economic security, harms local tourism industries, and causes lasting environmental damage.
Together, we can protect these essential public lands and build a sustainable future. Let's ensure they're preserved for generations to come.
