I am deeply concerned about the ongoing tolerance of racial slurs and bullying by President Donald Trump, especially his recent remarks during the State of the Union which spread hate, lies and misinformation. In this speech which was approved by over 70% of Republicans ,he once again referred to Senator Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas.” This term is offensive, perpetuates harmful stereotypes, and is widely recognized as racially insensitive.
The National Congress of American Indians condemned this nickname, calling it “insulting to all American Indians” and “smacks of racism.” Yet, Trump continues to use it with no consequence.
I urge Congress to censure Trump for his use of this during the State of the Union and all his other racial slurs, which undermine the integrity of public discourse and set a dangerous precedent. His behavior encourages others to tolerate bullying, leading to real-world harm, especially among our youth. The tragic case of Jocelyn Roja highlights the consequences of Trump’s fostering an environment of cruelty and intolerance.
As public leaders, it’s time to take action. You claim to be pro-life, yet allow our leader to promote harmful rhetoric that damages lives. Please stand up against this hate and protect our communities.
