Disappearing People to Torture: The Crisis of U.S. Deportations to El Salvador’s Mega-Prison I urge you to take immediate congressional action to stop the secretive and dangerous transfer of asylum seekers to CECOT, El Salvador’s notorious mega-prison, where they are held without due process and subjected to inhumane conditions. These deportations, initiated under President Trump’s policies, have escalated into a full-scale human rights crisis. The Case of Carlos Uzcategui and Hundreds More Carlos Uzcategui, a father and asylum seeker who fled Venezuela to protect his family, presented himself legally at a U.S. port of entry. Instead of receiving the protection our laws promise, he was detained, separated from his family, and secretly sent to CECOT—a country he has never lived in. His loved ones only learned of his fate when his photo appeared in the media. Hundreds of other families now face the same horror: their relatives disappeared without legal process and held in a foreign prison. CECOT: A Site of Abuse and Torture CECOT is not a lawful alternative to U.S. detention—it is a facility that has been condemned by international human rights groups. Detainees there endure solitary confinement for up to 24 hours a day, beatings, deprivation of food and medical care, sleep torture, and unsanitary conditions. This is not an immigration solution; it is a gross abuse of human rights facilitated by U.S. policy. Congress Must Restore Due Process and Accountability These deportations violate core American values and our obligations under international law. I urge you to investigate this practice and work to end any collaboration between U.S. agencies and El Salvador’s security state in disappearing migrants. I call on you to: • Demand immediate hearings on the U.S. role in deportations to CECOT • Press for the safe return of those unlawfully removed • Prohibit future deportations to countries that violate basic human rights • Ensure all asylum seekers receive their lawful day in court Disappearing people to torture is inexcusable. The time to act is now.
