An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop CPSC's Illegal Seizure of Patient Medical Records

Congress needs to act on two fronts: block the CPSC's unlawful grab for millions of Americans' ER records, and restore the agency's independent governing board. Right now, the CPSC is pressuring hospitals to hand over patients' names, addresses, diagnoses, and other personal details to a private Kansas contractor called Konza Health — which will hold that data for at least 30 days. The agency's own spokesperson admitted it hasn't provided the public notice required by federal law before collecting information from 10 or more entities. There is no legitimate reason the CPSC needs personally identifiable information from ER patients. The agency's own operating manual prohibits it. The CPSC has already mishandled the personal health data of roughly 30,000 people between 2017 and 2019. Routing sensitive records through a private company only multiplies that risk. Meanwhile, President Trump fired the agency's three Democratic board members, leaving it without proper oversight while it pursues this overreach. The CPSC should be focused on keeping dangerous products off shelves — not building a surveillance database of Americans' medical histories. Restore the board's independence and shut this program down.
