Reject E.J. Antoni's Nomination for BLS Commissioner
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Trump's nomination of E.J. Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This appointment poses a significant threat to the integrity and credibility of one of our nation's most crucial economic institutions.
E.J. Antoni, a 37-year-old economist from the Heritage Foundation, lacks the necessary government experience for this critical role. More alarmingly, his recently uncovered social media history reveals a pattern of behavior wholly incompatible with public service. Antoni operated a Twitter account, under various usernames including "ErwinJohnAntoni" and "phdofbombsaway," that contained sexually degrading attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, derogatory remarks about gay people, and promoted unfounded conspiracy theories.
The BLS requires leadership that is impartial, professional, and committed to accurate data reporting. Antoni's background suggests he may politicize this vital agency, potentially eroding public trust in employment data and disrupting financial markets. His presence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, though he reportedly did not enter the building, raises further questions about his judgment and commitment to democratic processes.
President Trump's unfounded accusations of corruption against the BLS, coupled with the firing of the Biden-appointed commissioner, already threaten the agency's perceived independence. Appointing a controversial figure like Antoni would only exacerbate these concerns.
I urge you to oppose E.J. Antoni's nomination during the Senate confirmation process. The American people deserve a BLS leader with unquestionable qualifications, integrity, and a commitment to objective economic analysis. Antoni's nomination jeopardizes the reliability of our national employment statistics and, by extension, the stability of our economy.
Please prioritize the long-term credibility of our government institutions over short-term political gains. Reject this nomination and insist on a candidate who can restore and maintain trust in the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
